Ellen of Swarbourn is a 16.2hh Chestnut Irish Draught Mare, with a very sweet nature. We bought "Shannon" in January 2003, with no papers, we was told she did have papers but they have been missed placed, and that she was 9-10 years old and an ex-hunter, through her freezemark, we was able to track down her first registered owner through them and in Feb (05) we received a phone call from Kathy Spall, stating that she had Ellen from being a foal upto 4 years old, luckily she still had a copy of her papers and provided us with her name, registration number with the Irish Draught Society and her parentage, so we was able to obtain a copy of her papers from the Irish Draught Society, Kathy also told us that she sold Ellen of Swarbourn "Shannon" to a friend called Michelle Hunt and she kept in touch with Kathy upto a few years ago and that she was registered Grade C with BSJA, then in between 2001 - 2003 she must have hunted, Kathy was very pleased that she could find out how she was doing. (Thank you Kathy for the information we will keep you informed on how she is doing.)
"Shannon" is so cheeky that she will also let herself out of her stable, she will look around to see if anyone is watching and if she thinks no-one is watching she will literally unbolt her door and let herself out so we have had to put a clip on her door so that she is still there when we go, as we have been up a few times and she has been out, once she even waited until we got there then decided to let herself out.
Now she is eventually started to relax when someone is on her back and is off the forehand. I think it has alot to do with our Blaze, bringing her out of her shell and learning to play and relax and actually be a horse.
After 2 years she has started playing with the other horses that we have, when she is in the field. it is great watching her play after such a long time. Before she was a "mother" to all the others, from the very beginning with Malley, then with vegas, Elvera, and then Blaze, but never played, blaze keeps bitting her hocks trying to play with her so she eventually did start to play with him this was when he was a foal.
Shannon has jumping 1m50 loose and 1m 20 with my friend Ken. She seems to need alot of reassurance/encouragement in what she is doing, With speaking to Kathy she has NEVER been able to hack out on her own, she wasn't confident enough and she still isn't but Ken has started to win her around and she has been on small hacks on her own.
